Edx Education® x The Very Hungry Caterpillar™
Bring Eric Carle’s much-loved story to life with The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ toys from Edx Education. Inspired by the classic storybook, each set invites hands-on, open-ended play, so children can build, sort, count and create while they retell the story.
The range includes My First Construction Cubes, My First Rainbow Pebbles®, My First Stamp Art and My First String Art. They make thoughtful Very Hungry Caterpillar™ gifts for Christmas and birthdays, and three of the four sets are suitable from 18 months, so they work well as Christmas gifts for toddlers. They are just as useful in nurseries and early years classrooms.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ toys: your questions answered
Our Very Hungry Caterpillar™ toys are inspired by Eric Carle’s much-loved storybook and sized for little hands, so children can build, sort, stamp and thread their way through the story.
How do these toys bring The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ story to life?
All four sets let children recreate the caterpillar and the butterfly he becomes, then explore more of his world along the way. With My First Construction Cubes, children build the caterpillar, flowers and more. The activity cards in My First Rainbow Pebbles® show how to put the pebbles together to make the caterpillar. My First Stamp Art lets children stamp the fruit the caterpillar eats through the week, and My First String Art lets them poke and thread animals such as the butterfly and a bird.
What age are The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ toys for?
My First Construction Cubes, My First Rainbow Pebbles® and My First Stamp Art are all suitable from 18 months. My First String Art is for ages 3 and up.
What will my child learn beyond the story?
Each set builds different skills. My First Construction Cubes are enlarged to 2.5cm so children from 18 months can grasp them easily, and they help children practise counting as they build. My First Rainbow Pebbles® help children recognise colours and shapes, and stacking different shapes on top of each other builds hand-eye coordination as the challenge grows. My First Stamp Art introduces different fruits and colours, and shows how layering colours creates new shades: for the pears the caterpillar eats on Tuesday, children stamp yellow and green on top of each other. With My First String Art, children poke and thread animals using the baseboards and coloured laces, learning to recognise them while practising fine motor skills.
Is there a Very Hungry Caterpillar™ toy for sensory play?
My First Rainbow Pebbles® have wobbling shapes, bright rainbow colours and a textured feel that invites children to touch and explore. Find more ideas in our sensory play collection.
Which Very Hungry Caterpillar™ toy makes the best gift for a toddler?
For under 3s, My First Construction Cubes and My First Rainbow Pebbles® are both suitable from 18 months and make thoughtful Christmas or birthday gifts. For a 3 year old who loves to create, try My First String Art, and see more in our present ideas.
Can I use them at story time or in a nursery?
Yes. Each set is designed for early years classrooms as well as home, and children can build, sort and create as they retell the story. Read more about storytelling through play.
